THE NEW GROUP f/64 MANIFESTO

A Declaration in Eleven Zones


We stand in the shadow of the original f/64 pioneers: Adams, Weston, Cunningham. In the early 20th century, they carved a path of clarity, depth, and unflinching realism in the face of romanticized pictorialism. They honored the world as it was, sharp and unsentimental. In that same spirit, we now answer the call of the 21st century. Not to repeat, but to evolve.


This manifesto is composed as a tribute to Ansel Adams' Zone System, which divided the grayscale of a photograph into eleven tonal steps from pure black to pure white. Each of the following zones reflects not only a tonal value, but a way of seeing. A commitment. A stance.


Zone 0 – The Black Frame

We begin in the absence of detail. Pure black. This is the unknown. The unexposed. The raw potential. Every photograph starts here. So does every act of seeing. From this darkness, we seek form. Meaning. Truth.


Zone I – Precision is Not Enough

The aperture alone does not define us. Where f/64 once stood for infinite depth of field and technical perfection, we now reclaim it as a metaphor for infinite perspective. We seek not only sharpness of image, but sharpness of seeing. A clarity of intent and vision that cuts through the noise of algorithms, filters, and simulations.


Zone II – Truth Over Trend

In an age of digital manipulation and infinite scroll, reality is more endangered than ever. We reject the aesthetic of deception. The synthetic skies, artificial hallucinations, and commodified beauty. We embrace authentic image-making as an act of resistance. The camera is not just a tool. It is a responsibility.


Zone III – Landscape is Legacy

The original Group f/64 immortalized the American West. We now expand that gaze. Climate collapse, environmental justice, urban entropy. These are our Yosemite. We photograph not just to preserve what is, but to witness what is vanishing. To stir conscience through clarity.


Zone IV – The Human Figure is Also a Landscape

We include the people. Their scars, their rituals, their resilience. In the 21st century, to exclude humanity is to ignore the primary force shaping the terrain. We render the human form with the same precision and respect as granite cliffs and desert plateaus.


Zone V – Diversity of Tool, Unity of Intention

Large format, mirrorless, drone, film, phone. We do not fetishize the tool. We judge the image by its honesty and power. Whether analog or digital, the photograph must stand on the integrity of its seeing, not its megapixels.


Zone VI – Slowness is a Form of Protest

We honor deliberate seeing in a distracted age. The tripod becomes a flagpole. Long exposures become meditations. Patience becomes rebellion.


Zone VII – No Image is Neutral

Every frame is a choice. Every crop is a statement. We own our subjectivity. But we strive for an honest subjectivity. To reveal rather than manipulate. To interpret rather than distort.


Zone VIII – The Archive is Sacred

We do not chase virality. We build bodies of work. We preserve, sequence, and contextualize. The book, the print, the wall. These matter. Our photographs are not content. They are testimony.


Zone IX – Clarity is a Form of Love

We photograph not to possess, but to understand. Not to flatten, but to reveal. The world is already full of spectacle. We seek something quieter. More reverent. More enduring. To see clearly is to care deeply. This is our discipline. This is our devotion.


Zone X – The White Void

The photograph ends where light overwhelms detail. This is not a flaw. It is a threshold. Our work points beyond itself. Toward the ineffable. Toward wonder. Toward what cannot be captured, only felt.
